Herb Wisdom

In an earlier comment posted by KarlaJo, she mentioned that she's welcomed summer by planting fresh basil. Being able to dash out and grab a snip of fresh herbs to sprinkle over a dish or toss into a salad takes a recipe to a whole new level of delightfulness and is every bit as good for the soul as a church choir.
Every year I try to plant an assortment of herbs and every year my thumb gets a little bit greener, however it's still a jealous shade of jade.

Last year I planted tarragon (my favorite), basil, rosemary, thyme, cilantro, parsley, oregano and chives. Ohh yeah, but I didn't mention that I put them in the same hanging basket. The good side, by having them in a basket, I avoided having my lovely toads burrow under the roots and uplift the plants. The bad side, an overzealous amount of herbs in one basket meant that only the parsley was able to grow over the edge of the planter and grow well, the others were never able to thrive.

Beings I have yet to plant my herbs and my garden (I have my fingers crossed for a very late winter, I guess), what is your growing advice? How have you planted your herbs with success? Which ones have you had luck with and which ones have you struggled with?

  1. I have pretty good luck with growing herbs. No toads here. Can you freeze fresh rosemary?
